No sooner than we finish up the Route 66 tour (which I’ll write about in detail later) ….
… I then get some “vacation time” and take a leisurely tour of the western Finger Lakes as a participant (NOT as leader) with Adventure Cycling. Great time, wonderful friendly happy riders, and the route is just perrrrrfect!
We did overnights at some of the finest parks in New York, like Fillmore Glen, Cayuga, Watkins Glen, Sampson, and Keuka Lake State Parks. Much of the route is right along some of the lakeshores when it’s not climbing the ridges to get from one to the other.
It was mostly a road tour, but we sneaked in just a bit of rail-trail on the Old Erie Canal, some bike paths around Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, and even a bit of simple single-track!
Yes, the Finger Lakes are a Fantasy Land! But don’t take my word for it. Ask Lyman Frank Baum, author of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. He was born in Chittenango New York … right on our route.

I’m back to “work” on Monday! New York based tours for Wilderness Voyageurs happen regularly through October and I don’t have to commute far!
